If you’re looking for a reliable BMW 5 Series, the 2010-2013 models in the F10 generation are often considered some of the most dependable. These years came with solid build quality and a range of engines that were well-refined by BMW standards. The naturally aspirated 3.0L inline-6 (found in the 528i) is especially known for its longevity, as it avoids some of the complications that come with turbochargers.
The earlier E39 generation (1997-2003) is another standout for reliability, provided it’s been well-maintained. It’s simpler in terms of electronics and has engines like the M54, which are considered bulletproof if you keep up with maintenance.
Of course, reliability always comes down to how well the car’s been cared for. A poorly maintained newer model will be more trouble than a well-loved older one.
