The most common problem with the BMW 5 Series, especially in older models, is oil leaks. The valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket are notorious for wearing out over time, leading to annoying (and messy) drips. If you catch it early, it’s an easy enough fix, but if you let it go, it can cause bigger issues.
The cooling system is another big one. Things like the water pump or thermostat have a habit of failing, especially after 80,000-100,000 miles. It’s just something you have to budget for with a BMW. And don’t even get me started on the electronics—while the tech is great, little glitches in the iDrive system or sensors can drive you nuts.
That said, if you stay on top of maintenance, these are all manageable. I’ve always found the 5 Series worth the effort—it’s a car that makes you smile every time you drive it. Just keep a good repair manual handy, and you’ll be set to handle most of what comes your way.
