Renault isn’t sold in the US because they left the market in the late 1980s due to poor sales and a shift in strategy. Back then, Renault owned a stake in AMC (American Motors Corporation) and sold cars like the Renault Alliance and Encore. While these cars had their fans, they struggled to compete against Japanese brands like Toyota and Honda, which were gaining popularity for their reliability and value.
When AMC was sold to Chrysler in 1987, Renault pulled out of the US market entirely. Since then, Renault has focused on Europe, Asia, and other regions where their smaller, fuel-efficient cars are more in demand. The US market’s preference for larger vehicles and trucks doesn’t align well with Renault’s lineup, which is why they haven’t returned. It’s a shame—they’ve got some great cars that Americans would probably enjoy!
