If the parking brake lever is slipping on the cable, it usually means one of three things: the cable is stretched, the adjuster is out of spec, or the ratcheting mechanism inside the lever is worn out.
First thing I’d do is check the adjustment. The Lucerne has a self-adjusting system, but sometimes it doesn’t take up enough slack. Try pumping the pedal (or pulling the handle) multiple times to see if it tightens up. If that doesn’t work, you might need to manually adjust it at the equalizer under the car. The adjuster nut is on the cable assembly near the rear of the vehicle—tighten it slightly to remove slack.
If the cable itself is slipping where it attaches to the lever, check if the cable end is properly seated in the bracket. Sometimes they pop out or wear down, making them loose. If it’s frayed or stretched beyond adjustment, it’ll need to be replaced.
Worst case? The ratcheting mechanism inside the lever is worn out, and it’s not holding tension like it should. If that’s the case, you’ll probably need a new lever assembly. I strongly recommend getting the 2006-2009 Buick Lucerne Service & Repair Manual Software to find out more about your issue and the corresponding troubleshooting/replacement procedure. Good luck!
