Swapping out the neutral switch on your Yamaha Kodiak 400 is a pretty straightforward job, but you’ll need to get to the lower side of the engine to do it. Here’s how want to do it:
First, disconnect the battery to avoid any electrical issues. The neutral switch is usually located near the bottom of the engine case, on the left-hand side. You’ll see a single wire connection leading to it — start by unplugging that.
Next, you’ll need to drain the engine oil (or at least tilt the ATV to the side) since the switch threads directly into the crankcase, and removing it will let some oil out. Once that’s done, use a wrench or socket to unscrew the old switch. If it’s stuck, a little penetrating oil can help break it loose.
Before installing the new switch, check the sealing washer. If it’s worn or damaged, replace it to prevent oil leaks. Then, screw in the new switch hand-tight first, followed by a snug turn with the wrench — don’t overtighten it, or you’ll risk damaging the threads.
Reconnect the wire, top off the engine oil if needed, and test it by turning the key on. If the neutral light comes on when the ATV is in neutral, you’re all set.
In any case, this manual contains the manufacturer's recommended procedure to replace the neutral switch, including torque specs, wiring diagrams, and step-by-step instructions.
Good luck!
