Adjusting the valves on your RZR 800 is easier when you take your time. Here’s how to do it:
First, make sure the engine is completely cool before you start. Pop off the seat and center console to get to the valve cover, then disconnect the battery—always a good habit when working around the engine.
Next, pull the spark plugs so the engine turns over easier, then unbolt the valve cover. You’ll see the rocker arms and valves underneath. Now, you need to rotate the crankshaft (using a socket on the primary clutch) until the cam lobes are pointing away from the valve tappets—this means you’re at Top Dead Center (TDC) for that cylinder, and it’s the right time to adjust.
Now grab a feeler gauge and check the gap between the rocker arm and the valve. For the RZR 800, you’re aiming for:
- Intake: 0.006 inches (0.15mm)
- Exhaust: 0.010 inches (0.25mm)
If it’s off, just loosen the lock nut, turn the adjuster screw to get the right gap, then tighten the lock nut while holding the adjuster in place. It’s a small tweak but makes a big difference in how smooth the engine runs.
Once everything looks good, bolt the valve cover back on (replace the gasket if needed), reconnect everything, and fire it up. If you still hear excessive ticking, you might need to go back and fine-tune the adjustment.
In any case, this manual contains the factory's recommended procedure to adjust the valves, including step-by-step instructions, clear images, and exploded-view illustrations. If you want to do it absolutely right, this is what you need 😉
