I've done some exhaust removals on an SL500 before and it's not that complicated, but it does require some patience — especially if the bolts are rusted.
I usually start by disconnecting the battery to avoid any electrical issues while working around the engine bay. Then, get under the car and locate the exhaust manifold-to-pipe connection. The pipes are bolted to the exhaust manifolds with flange bolts, which may be rusted tight. If that's the case, you'll want to spray them with penetrating oil like PB Blaster or WD-40 and letting them soak for a while.
Once the bolts are loosened, support the exhaust pipe so it doesn’t drop suddenly. If the pipe is stuck to the manifold, a few light taps with a rubber mallet should help break the seal. Be mindful of the O2 sensors; if they're in the way, you might need to disconnect them to avoid damage.
I would recommend you get your hands on the 2004 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class SL500 (R230) OEM Download Service & Repair Manual Software. It has the manufacturer's recommendation on how you can do this task properly. Good luck!
