The Volvo V50 does share its platform (the P1 platform) with the European Ford Focus and Mazda 3, but not all engines in the V50 are Ford-sourced. Some versions of the V50, particularly those with smaller diesel engines like the 1.6L or 2.0L diesel units, use engines developed in collaboration with Ford and PSA (Peugeot-Citroën).
On the other hand, the larger engines, such as Volvo’s inline-5 petrol and diesel engines, are proprietary Volvo designs. These engines highlight Volvo’s engineering independence, despite the shared platform.
