Mariner engines were originally manufactured by Yamaha. However, after a competition inquiry by U.S. authorities, Mercury Marine took over the manufacturing. This transition allowed Mercury Marine to benefit from shared research and development as well as economies of scale in the manufacturing process. Today, Mariner outboards are produced by Mercury Marine, making them essentially identical to Mercury outboards in terms of design and components.
