Evinrude and Johnson outboards have a shared history but are not exactly the same. Both brands merged in 1936 to form the Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC), which allowed them to share technology and manufacturing processes. In 2001, after OMC filed for bankruptcy, Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) acquired both brands.
Historically, Evinrude was often seen as a more premium brand, while Johnson was marketed as a more accessible option. In later years, Evinrude focused on advanced two-stroke engines using E-TEC technology, which offered improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions. Johnson, on the other hand, continued to produce both two-stroke and four-stroke engines.
BRP discontinued the Johnson brand in 2007 and later ceased production of Evinrude outboards in 2020. Despite this, BRP still supports existing engines with parts and service.
While Evinrude and Johnson outboards shared many similarities due to their common ownership and technology, they were positioned differently in the market and had distinct product lines. Both brands are now discontinued, but they remain supported by BRP.
