The Smart car, specifically the Smart Fortwo model, saw its last year of sales in the United States and Canada in 2019. This decision was driven by declining sales and the high costs associated with meeting automotive regulations in the North American market. However, global production of the Smart EQ Fortwo continued until mid-2024, marking the end of an era for the compact city car that had been in production since 1998.
Smart is currently developing a successor to the Fortwo, tentatively referred to as the Smart #2. This new model will be based on a new platform called Electric Compact Architecture (ECA). While Smart is actively working on the new Fortwo EV iteration, the brand is seeking partners to make the project viable, and no specific launch date has been announced yet.
Despite the end of production for the EQ Fortwo, the brand remains committed to its legacy of compact electric vehicles and is looking toward the future with its next-generation models.
