There are several differences between the MerCruiser Alpha One Gen 1 and Gen 2 drives. The Gen 2 units, introduced in 1991, have a more streamlined gear housing and feature improvements in the gear set and water pump design. The Gen 2 also uses a different style of propeller shaft, requiring a specific propeller with a flo-torq II hub. The trim cylinders are also slightly different, with the Gen 2 having larger, more durable attachment hardware.
