Hi!
Unfortunately, I'm not exactly sure what you mean here...
If there are no DTCs stored in the ECM, then you won't be able to "start to get the codes"... Simply can't pull codes that haven't been recorded in the computer in the first place...
However, if you refer to the procedure to pull DTC codes without a scan tool (using the "check engine light blinking" method"), here's how it's done:
- Turn the ignition ON (do not start the engine).
- Locate the Assembly Line Data Link (ALDL) connector attached to the ECM wiring harness — most ALDL connectors are located under the dash on the driver's side of the vehicle but may be elsewhere depending on your exact variant (for more details about the exact location of the ALDL connector on your car, see the manual attached).
- Once located, insert a jumper wire between terminal "B" (diagnostic test terminal) and terminal "A" (ground) of the ALDL connector.
- If a DTC code is recorded in the ECM, the check engine light will start flashing, identifying a specific DTC code. The first series of flashes is the first digit of the DTC code; the second series of flashes is the second digit, and so on. Trouble codes are displayed starting with the lowest numbered code. Each code is displayed 3 times. Codes will continue to repeat as long as the ALDL test terminal is grounded.
