However, reports suggest that a few <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emanualonline.com\/blog\/tag\/ev\/\">EV<\/a> issues have put off customers in the US. Namely, truck fans are worried about the electric-only range. Despite the advancement in battery technology, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emanualonline.com\/blog\/tag\/ev\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">electric vehicles<\/a> still lag behind gas-powered cars in that area. Moreover, refilling an empty tank is much shorter than recharging a depleted battery.<\/p>\n<p>To address the problem, Ford may be looking at sneaking in a small range-extender gas engine, as demonstrated by patents published recently.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8491 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.emanualonline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Ford-F-150-range-extender-patent-1.png\" alt=\"Ford F-150 range-extender patent \" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.emanualonline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Ford-F-150-range-extender-patent-1.png 800w, https:\/\/www.emanualonline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Ford-F-150-range-extender-patent-1-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/www.emanualonline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Ford-F-150-range-extender-patent-1-768x576.png 768w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/600;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The F-150 range-extender won&#8217;t power the wheels itself, though. Instead, it will recharge the batteries while stationary or driving, just like a small gas or diesel generator. However, the engine needs to be small and light. Otherwise, it might hurt the electric-only range and performance, defeating the whole purpose of the system.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the range-extender requires a fuel tank, an exhaust system, and all related parts. It&#8217;ll be interesting to see how Ford managed to pack all those things in a small package. As it stands, it&#8217;s possible that the manufacturer might even refer to a third-party for the development.<\/p>\n<p>With that being said, Ford&#8217;s all-electric F-150 is expected to arrive in the next two years.
