The company is well known for producing great cars throughout its history. The Toyota Supra is no exception. The Toyota Supra is a long and colorful history and continues to be a car that is enjoyed today. Toyota Supra owners would do well to have the Toyota Supra repair manual on hand to make sure their car is running smoothly.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at the Toyota Supra <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motortrend.com\/cars\/toyota\/supra\/\">history<\/a> and we will see why it is continues to be popular today. With such a large following, the Toyota Supra service manual is something that fans would enjoy reading through.<\/p>\n<h2>History<\/h2>\n<p>The Supra was first produced by Toyota in 1978. Between 1978 and 2002, the company would produce 4 generations of this car. The Supra was originally intended to be a sports car. Although originally based off of the Celica, the Supra had its own unique touches.<\/p>\n<p>This original Supra was also heavily influenced by the 2000GT. In fact, the first 3 Toyota Supra generations had certain qualities in common. It wasn\u2019t until the 4th generation that there were radical changes and differences.<\/p>\n<h2>The first generation<\/h2>\n<p>The first generation of the Supra was based on the Celica, and in fact was called the Celica xx. This generation ran from 1978-1981. This original Supra was offered with an inline 6 engine. It is interesting to note that the Japanese market offered a smaller engine so that buyers would not have to pay a fee for a larger one.<\/p>\n<p>In 1979 the Supra was exported to markets overseas. It could be purchased as a 5-speed manual or a 4 speed automatic.<\/p>\n<p>The interior of this generation of the Toyota Supra featured power windows and power locks as package options. The convenience package also included cruise control, special door trim and an optional sunroof. The brakes were standard 4 wheel discs and the suspension was a 4 link rear suspension with coil springs. A lateral track bar and stabilizer bar completed the rear suspension system.<\/p>\n<p>The first cosmetic redesign came in 1980. The center console was redesigned and a quartz clock was added. On the outside, there were new side view mirrors and aluminum wheels. Mud flaps could now be added to the body.<\/p>\n<p>For the model year 1981, Toyota updated the engine on the Supra. The company added a 5M-E engine. It was a 12 valve SOHC engine, but it changed the displacement and torque. At this point, the Supra could go from 0-60 mph in 10.24 seconds. This upgrade also saw the addition of a new Sports Performance Package. This included a new sports suspension and front and rear spoilers. Toyota decided to completely revamp the Supra during this generation. The front end of the Supra was redesigned and the front headlights were completely retractable. The engine for this generation was an inline 6 engine and were given a longer base.<\/p>\n<p>For the North American market, there were 2 different versions of the Supra offered &#8211; the L type and the P type. This stood for the Luxury type and the Performance type. The difference between the two types were cosmetic.<\/p>\n<p>The P type was a sportier car. There was fiberglass over the wheel wells. In addition, the P type had 8 way adjustable seating. This version had optional headlight washers available.<\/p>\n<p>The L type version had a leather interior and the option to add a digital instrument cluster on the dashboard. This digital cluster contained a digital tachometer, speedometer, and electronic fuel and coolant gauges.<\/p>\n<p>For the model year 1982, Toyota again made adjustments and changes to the engine. Now it was a 12 valve DOHC engine. It was now able to go from 0-60mph in under 10 seconds.<\/p>\n<h3>2nd Generation, cont.<\/h3>\n<p>Options for this generation included a cassette stereo with a 105-watt power amplifier and a seven-band graphic equalizer. The antenna for the standard radio was now built into the front window, instead of extending in to the air. Toyota also added a lock to the gas door and the rear bumper was black for all colors of the car.<\/p>\n<p>By 1984, the power was greatly increased. Toyota engineers accomplished this by redesigning the intake manifold. The other changes this year were cosmetic. On the exterior changes included the switch to wraparound front turn signals and the addition of a one-piece rear wing spoiler mounted high up on the rear hatch. Two-tone paint options were now available to consumers. The Supra continued to be a rear wheel drive, sporty car. By this point in its history, the Supra was truly its own car and was no longer attached to the Celica. The turbo charged engine greatly increased the power and torque and now the Supra could reach even greater speeds at a much quicker rate.<\/p>\n<p>It is interesting to note that the twin turbo chargers worked sequentially, instead of in parallel. It works by sending all of the exhaust first turbine, which results in reduced lag. Some exhaust is rerouted to the 2nd turbine at 3500 RPM. By 4000 RPM, the second turbines output is used to augment the first one\u2019s output. This resulted in a greater boost and enhanced torque. Using the twin turbos in this way gives a much higher RPM boost.\u00a0 To go along with this new engine, Toyota also added a new 6 speed gearbox.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the faster engine and twin turbos, Toyota began to use aluminum for the body. This change made the car lighter. The most notable being The Fast and The Furious.<\/p>\n<p>This car has also won many awards and much acclaim over the years.<\/p>\n<h2>The Future<\/h2>\n<p>In 2019 Toyota revealed a 5th generations of the Supra that will go on sale for the model year 2020. This time it will be a collaboration with BMW<\/p>\n<p>The Toyota Supra has been and continues to be a staple in the Toyota family.
