Since its\u00a0debut<\/span>\u00a0in 1985, the BMW\u00a0M5<\/span>\u00a0has\u00a0been<\/span>\u00a0the pinnacle of performance sedans.<\/span>\u00a0Each\u00a0generation<\/span>\u00a0combined cutting edge performance engines with razor-sharp handling characteristics,\u00a0turning<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0daily-driver<\/span>\u00a0family\u00a0car<\/span>\u00a0into a race bread driving machine.<\/span>\u00a0This is the super sedan that turned the car world on its head and made BMW the German sports car masters.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While its\u00a0little brother<\/span>, the legendary M3, gets all the racing credits, this big\u00a0fast<\/span>\u00a0sedan proved to the\u00a0world<\/span>\u00a0that you do not need\u00a0a little<\/span>\u00a0coupe to have fun at the\u00a0track<\/span>\u00a0or on the\u00a0twisty<\/span> alpine roads.<\/span>\u00a0No\u00a0matter<\/span>\u00a0which\u00a0generation<\/span>\u00a0we talk about, the\u00a0formula<\/span>\u00a0for\u00a0an\u00a0M5<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>car<\/span> is practically the same…<\/span>\u00a0Take<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0production<\/span>\u00a0executive saloon and\u00a0put<\/span>\u00a0the strongest\u00a0production<\/span>\u00a0engine in\u00a0it<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0As a powerful car needs to stop\u00a0eventually<\/span>,\u00a0fit<\/span>\u00a0it<\/span>\u00a0with\u00a0stronger<\/span>\u00a0brakes.<\/span>\u00a0Firm<\/span>\u00a0up the\u00a0suspension<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0make it<\/span> go around the corners better.<\/span>\u00a0On\u00a0top<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0all that<\/span>,\u00a0fit<\/span>\u00a0it<\/span>\u00a0with\u00a0all<\/span> the latest available luxuries and comfort features.<\/span>\u00a0Blend\u00a0all<\/span>\u00a0these ingredients in the\u00a0right<\/span> way, and you will end up with a balanced high-performance car<\/span>\u00a0that\u00a0combines<\/span> speed and handling<\/span>\u00a0with\u00a0comfort<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0luxury<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Although other cars do\u00a0this as well, not many of them can\u00a0carry<\/span>\u00a0up to five\u00a0persons<\/span>\u00a0with\u00a0luggage<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

E28 M5<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

The story<\/span>\u00a0of the\u00a0M5<\/span>\u00a0actually<\/span>\u00a0begins with another M\u00a0car<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0In<\/span> the ’70s, BMW jointed with Dallara<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0Lamborgini<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0develop<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0mid-engine<\/span>\u00a0supercar, aimed to defeat Porsche at Le Mans.<\/span>\u00a0Although the rules changes and a series of other problems practically turned this project into a disaster, the BMW did end up with a great engine out of the whole experiment.<\/span>\u00a0This incredible racing\u00a0engine<\/span>\u00a0had not only great performance, but it was also surprisingly reliable.<\/span>\u00a0At that\u00a0time<\/span>,\u00a0BMW<\/span>\u00a0already had a\u00a0sporty<\/span>\u00a0saloon, called the\u00a0535i<\/span>, but that didn’t have an\u00a0engine<\/span>\u00a0design by\u00a0BMWs<\/span>\u00a0motorsport.<\/span>\u00a0And that was about to\u00a0change<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0The\u00a0M88<\/span>\u00a0straight-6 engine made 273 HP and one incredible sound.<\/span>\u00a0And since\u00a0it<\/span>\u00a0was\u00a0designed<\/span>\u00a0for the harsh conditions of endurance racing\u00a0it<\/span>\u00a0was pretty much overqualified for street duty.<\/span>\u00a0It<\/span>\u00a0also<\/span>\u00a0had individual\u00a0throttle<\/span>\u00a0bodies which not only that give an instant\u00a0throttle<\/span>\u00a0response, but sound awesome as well.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BMW shoved this engine under the\u00a0hood<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0E28<\/span>\u00a05 series sedan, tweaked the\u00a0brakes<\/span>\u00a0and the\u00a0suspension<\/span>, and the legend<\/span>\u00a0was<\/span>\u00a0born<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Making<\/span>\u00a0its\u00a0debut<\/span> at the 1985 Amsterdam Motor Show, it was an instant hit.<\/span>\u00a0When\u00a0critics<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0owners<\/span>\u00a0got<\/span>\u00a0their\u00a0hands<\/span>\u00a0on the finished\u00a0product, they\u00a0were blown away by the\u00a0M5<\/span>\u2019s razor-sharp handling and epic engine.<\/span>\u00a0A big, comfortable sedan that could go head-to-head with the Ferrari 308\u00a0was<\/span>\u00a0like nothing\u00a0done<\/span>\u00a0ever<\/span>\u00a0before<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0It was unstoppable for\u00a0fun<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0performance<\/span>\u00a0in an inconspicuous package.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What additionally set the first\u00a0M5<\/span>\u00a0apart from other sedans and\u00a0sports cars<\/span>\u00a0was<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0fact<\/span>\u00a0that it was completely hand-built.<\/span>\u00a0Bodies<\/span>\u00a0were\u00a0shipped<\/span>\u00a0from the main\u00a0BMW<\/span>\u00a0factory to the\u00a0BMW<\/span>\u00a0Motorsport divisions facility, where\u00a0highly<\/span>\u00a0trained technicians\u00a0joined<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0body<\/span>\u00a0with their own\u00a0tuned<\/span>\u00a0chassis<\/span>\u00a0and drivetrain.<\/span>\u00a0The first\u00a0version<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0M5<\/span>\u00a0was\u00a0only<\/span>\u00a0made for<\/span>\u00a03\u00a0years<\/span>\u00a0and since\u00a0they were hand-built, a little over 2.000 of them were\u00a0sold<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

E34 M5<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

The M5<\/span>\u00a0name<\/span>\u00a0continued<\/span>\u00a0with the\u00a0release<\/span>\u00a0of the\u00a0new<\/span>\u00a0E34<\/span>\u00a0generation 5-series.<\/span>\u00a0The new\u00a0M5<\/span>\u00a0which\u00a0appeared<\/span>\u00a0in 1989, was still hand-assembled at BMW Motorsport headquarters.<\/span>\u00a0The\u00a0overall<\/span>\u00a0concept was\u00a0almost<\/span>\u00a0identical to the previous car, although significantly improved and modernized in every\u00a0aspect<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0The\u00a0engine<\/span>, which\u00a0was<\/span>\u00a0an\u00a0evolution<\/span>\u00a0of an\u00a0original<\/span>\u00a0M88<\/span>\u00a0engine<\/span>, boasted more\u00a0power<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0torque<\/span>, with\u00a0figures<\/span>\u00a0going up to 335 HP and 295 lb-ft in\u00a0final<\/span>\u00a0years.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Supplement that with lower ride height, firmer suspension and bigger brakes, you have basically everything\u00a0needed<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0make it<\/span>\u00a0an M creation.<\/span>\u00a0This<\/span>\u00a0is<\/span>\u00a0the first\u00a0car<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0this<\/span>\u00a0series<\/span>\u00a0that\u00a0used<\/span>\u00a0electronic damper control.<\/span>\u00a0This<\/span>\u00a0allowed<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0change<\/span>\u00a0in ride stiffness from comfortable to\u00a0sporty<\/span>\u00a0with a\u00a0click<\/span>\u00a0of a\u00a0button<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Later models even\u00a0came with<\/span>\u00a0a six-speed gearbox.<\/span>\u00a0And at\u00a0top<\/span>\u00a0of all that,\u00a0it<\/span>\u00a0came<\/span>\u00a0as a\u00a0wagon<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0It<\/span> was the same curve bending<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0tail<\/span>\u00a0sliding<\/span>\u00a0beast<\/span>\u00a0that everyone had\u00a0come to<\/span>\u00a0know<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0love<\/span>, but now\u00a0it<\/span>\u00a0was even more practical.<\/span>\u00a0In the\u00a0period<\/span>\u00a0between 1989 and 1995, with 12.254\u00a0M5<\/span>\u00a0in both forms were\u00a0produced<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The next generation, the E39 M5 model<\/a>,\u00a0 brought<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0big<\/span>\u00a0change, as\u00a0come<\/span>\u00a0as the\u00a0demand<\/span>\u00a0for the\u00a0m5<\/span>\u00a0was so large, that<\/span>\u00a0BMW couldn’t afford to stifle production numbers by\u00a0having<\/span>\u00a0them assembled by\u00a0hand<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0The new\u00a0M5<\/span>\u00a0would be built next to their\u00a0normal<\/span>\u00a05<\/span>\u00a0Series\u00a0siblings<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Luckily, although\u00a0now<\/span>\u00a0being\u00a0produced<\/span>\u00a0on a \u2018mass scale\u2019, the new\u00a0M5<\/span>\u00a0did not lose any of its performance focus.<\/span>\u00a0Beneath the\u00a0hood<\/span>\u00a0was<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0biggest<\/span>\u00a0departure from the\u00a0original<\/span>\u00a0M5<\/span>\u00a0formula – a 4.9-liter aluminum block\u00a0v8<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Still, with dual air intakes and electronically controlled individual throttle bodies, this\u00a0was<\/span>\u00a0not an ordinary V8.<\/span>\u00a0It was\u00a0also<\/span>\u00a0the first\u00a0M5<\/span>\u00a0engine<\/span>\u00a0that\u00a0used<\/span>\u00a0double-VANOS<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0This variable valve\u00a0timing system\u00a0gave<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0much<\/span>\u00a0wider torque range, making the car more drivable.<\/span>\u00a0With 400 HP and 369 lb-ft on\u00a0tap<\/span>,\u00a0mated<\/span>\u00a0to a six-speed gearbox and a limited-slip differential, the new\u00a0M5<\/span> would spin the rear tires with ease<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The suspension<\/span>\u00a0received<\/span>\u00a0significant\u00a0updates<\/span>, with aluminum wishbones at\u00a0the front<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0multi-link\u00a0suspension<\/span>\u00a0at the rear.<\/span>\u00a0Keeping up with the upcoming millennium, BMW modernized the styling.<\/span>\u00a0The traditional individual headlights and rigid lines\u00a0were<\/span>\u00a0things\u00a0of the\u00a0past<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0The new\u00a0M5<\/span>\u00a0was sleek and subtle, but still muscular.<\/span>\u00a0It was refined and comfortable, but still able to\u00a0transform<\/span>\u00a0into a supercar at a moment’s notice.<\/span>\u00a0Although at least one\u00a0prototype<\/span>\u00a0was\u00a0made<\/span>, a torturing version was never introduced into\u00a0production<\/span>,\u00a0due to<\/span>\u00a0financial considerations.<\/span>\u00a0The\u00a0E39<\/span>\u00a0was in production from 1998 to 2003, with\u00a0a total\u00a0of 20.482\u00a0cars<\/span>\u00a0sold worldwide.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Again<\/span>,\u00a0big<\/span>\u00a0changes were on the horizon for the\u00a0world<\/span>‘s premier sports sedan.<\/span>\u00a0Again, one of them was styling, as \u2018flaming surfaces\u2019 design was controversial, at least to\u00a0say<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0The other\u00a0main<\/span>\u00a0difference\u00a0was<\/span>, once more, under the\u00a0hood<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0With BMW being\u00a0highly<\/span>\u00a0involved in Formula One at that\u00a0time<\/span>, it\u00a0is<\/span>\u00a0no\u00a0surprise<\/span>\u00a0to find much of that\u00a0technology<\/span>\u00a0pouring<\/span> into new M5<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For\u00a0starts<\/span>, a\u00a0V10<\/span>\u00a0engine<\/span>,\u00a0developing<\/span>\u00a0out 500 HP and 384 lb-ft of\u00a0torque<\/span>, with a redline just over 8.200\u00a0RPM<\/span>.<\/span> Next, a 7 speed sequential<\/span>\u00a0manual\u00a0gearbox<\/span>, which\u00a0was<\/span>\u00a0the fastest shifting\u00a0gearbox<\/span>\u00a0at the\u00a0time<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0And lastly, electronically limited-slip differential\u00a0ensured<\/span> superb control at the limit<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Although the\u00a0E60<\/span>\u00a0was<\/span>\u00a0a true race-inspired sedan, with one\u00a0push<\/span>\u00a0of the\u00a0button<\/span>\u00a0it would\u00a0transform<\/span>\u00a0into a\u00a0comfortable<\/span>\u00a0family car.<\/span>\u00a0This time, it was even available in a practical touring version.<\/span>\u00a0During production 2005 – 2010 run,\u00a0a total<\/span>\u00a0of 20.548\u00a0cars<\/span>\u00a0were\u00a0made<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u00a0seems<\/span>\u00a0that aging meant\u00a0gaining<\/span>\u00a0a few\u00a0pounds<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0inches<\/span>\u00a0to the\u00a0waistline<\/span>, as the\u00a0new<\/span>\u00a0M5<\/span>\u00a0was noticeably bigger and\u00a0somewhat<\/span>\u00a0heavier than the previous model.<\/span>\u00a0And by this\u00a0time<\/span>, the\u00a0era<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0bigger<\/span>\u00a0engines and more cylinders came to a predictable end, as even the\u00a0new<\/span>\u00a0M5<\/span>\u00a0succumbed to the downsizing trends.<\/span>\u00a0Luckily, all-new twin-turbocharged V8 with 550 HP and a massive 502 lb-ft of torque<\/span>, was more than capable of handling the\u00a0extra<\/span>\u00a0weight.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It was\u00a0combined<\/span>\u00a0with a 7-speed dual-clutch\u00a0transmission<\/span>, first of its kind<\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0an\u00a0M5<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0And with active M-differential capable of\u00a0torque<\/span>\u00a0vectoring, the\u00a0car<\/span>\u00a0would\u00a0easily<\/span>\u00a0find any shred of\u00a0grip<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Sure, purists were a little hesitant to\u00a0embrace<\/span>\u00a0the forced-induction, but the\u00a0acceleration<\/span>\u00a0and top speed figures spoke for themselves.<\/span>\u00a0Even the\u00a0fuel economy<\/span>\u00a0was\u00a0noticeably<\/span>\u00a0improved.<\/span>\u00a0However, this\u00a0generation<\/span>\u00a0seemed to\u00a0lack<\/span>\u00a0some of the steering\u00a0feel<\/span>\u00a0and overall race driving experience.<\/span>\u00a0In the\u00a0end<\/span>, the\u00a0F10<\/span>\u00a0lasted for seven\u00a0years<\/span>, with 19.533\u00a0cars<\/span>\u00a0made.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another refresh in 2017 which\u00a0gave<\/span>\u00a0us the current\u00a0M5<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Although the previous generation\u00a0was<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0fast<\/span>\u00a0and capable car, many\u00a0argued<\/span>\u00a0that it\u00a0<\/span>lost<\/span>\u00a0some<\/span> of the \u2018Ultimate Driving Machine\u2019 feel<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0To\u00a0set<\/span>\u00a0things<\/span>\u00a0straight, new\u00a0F90<\/span>\u00a0raises the\u00a0stakes<\/span>\u00a0with maybe the most radical updates so far.<\/span>\u00a0And this\u00a0time<\/span>, they are not under the\u00a0hood<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Even though the engine<\/span>\u00a0is\u00a0now<\/span>\u00a0delivering\u00a0590HP<\/span>\u00a0and 550 lb-ft of\u00a0torque<\/span>, it is essentially the same turbocharged V8 from the previous generation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The game-changer is\u00a0hidden<\/span>\u00a0underneath the\u00a0car<\/span>, as this is the first time any M-car uses\u00a0an all-wheel<\/span>\u00a0drive.<\/span>\u00a0However, even in the normal drive, the X-drive system is biased towards the rear\u00a0wheels<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0And, it can also be configured to disconnect the front axle,\u00a0sending<\/span>\u00a0all the\u00a0power<\/span>\u00a0to the rear\u00a0wheels<\/span>\u00a0only.<\/span>\u00a0Another major update is a gearbox, with the current car being available only with an automatic transmission.<\/span>\u00a0It may seem odd at\u00a0first<\/span>, but the 8-speed automatic\u00a0is<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0state<\/span>\u00a0of the\u00a0art<\/span>\u00a0that shifts as fast as DTC gearbox while being far more durable.<\/span>\u00a0All this, combined with a weight reduction of 40kg, helped\u00a0re-establish<\/span>\u00a0the new\u00a0M5<\/span>\u00a0as a\u00a0king<\/span> of performance family cars.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
