Soon, Tesla vehicles equipped with the “Autopilot” feature will receive a full-fledged self-driving update. However, that doesn’t seem like a good idea since most drivers already abuse the system.<\/p>\n

As of October 20, Tesla started rolling out the beta version of its new Full Self-Driving (FSD) system to a handful of cautious and experienced drivers. More owners will gradually get the update in a staggered manner.<\/p>\n

The new update will allow your Tesla<\/a> to change lane, navigate around objects or vehicles, make turns, and enable the driver to select forks to follow the navigation route.<\/p>\n

Tesla included the new feature in its major \u201cAutopilot<\/a> Rewrite,\u201d a significant reworking of the system. Since it first came out, the software learned people\u2019s behaviors and made improvements accordingly. Nevertheless, Tesla is hugely cautious in rolling out this update, as lives are literally at stake here.<\/p>\n

With that being said, drivers will still need to be attentive at all times. According to Tesla, the system \u201cmay do the wrong thing at the worst time.\u201d Consequently, drivers will need to keep their hands on the steering wheel, pay extra attention to the road, and be ready to take over control at any given time.<\/p>\n

A few drivers that got the \u201cAutopilot Rewrite\u201d already posted their reviews and experiences online. The reviews are all good, with tiny and easily-fixable inconsistencies in the new FSD system. And if everything goes as planned, it looks like Tesla might be closer than ever to driverless transportation.<\/p>\n

Once testing is complete and the FDS is fully operational, it will be made available to all Tesla cars equipped with the Autopilot pack through an over-the-air update.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Elon Musk explained that the optional \u201cAutopilot\u201d package prices would increase by $2,000 in the US<\/a>, taking the total cost to $10,000.<\/p>\n

While everything seems to be all good and well with Tesla pushing its self-driving system even further, is there anyone that could explain the usefulness of an Autopilot system requiring drivers to keep their hands on the steering wheel at all times? Wasn’t the objective to be able to do other things while on Autopilot?<\/p>\n

It sometimes feels like those guys might have lost the focus here and are just trying to showcase engineering skills…<\/p>\n
