The Polo was first produced in 1975. The first generation was manufactured until 1981. The car was so popular yay by 1975 there had been 500,000 cars produced worldwide. In 1981 the Polo received a new grille, plastic rear bumper, mirrors, and a new dashboard. The round headlights were replaced with large square versions as well.
The second generation Polo was produced from 1981 until 1994. A wagon and a couple version were introduced during this generation though both body styles were hatchbacks. By 1983 one million Polos had been produced and by 1986 over two million. The Polo was one of the largest super mini cars available on the market at the time. The third generation Polo was released in 1994 and produced until 2002. The third generation was almost a completely new model car. There was a three door and five door hatchback version available. In 1999 the car received a facelift which included new headlights, new bumpers, and a new interior design. The new exterior featured a full galvanized shell. The fourth generation was manufactured from 2002 until 2009. The car gained back the round headlight design during 2002 which was the biggest design change. The Polo fifth generation ran from 2009 until 2018. In 2010 the Polo was awarded Japan Import Car of the Year and the What Car? Supermini of the Year Award. In 2014 the car received a facelift which included a new steering wheel, touch screen radio display, and CarPlay.
