The Pontiac GTO is a classic performance muscle car, and was one of the first to make muscle vehicles popular. The GTO was known for a timeless, powerful exterior appearance backed by unparalleled performance from under the hood. If you’ve never thought about do-it-yourself (DIY) car maintenance, there’s nothing better to do it on then a collector vehicle! Collector cars are worth far more than your average car, because the model comes with a story and history. Pontiac was part of the larger company, General Motors, which means the vehicle isn’t as difficult to fix as import models.

They very first GTOs were not available as their own model, but were trim options for the LeMans and Tempest models. In 1966, the GTO was made into its own model. They were only sold as 2-door vehicles, and were sold with the option between a powerful 6.4L or 6.6L V8 engine. This was undoubtedly the peak of GTO models.

A second generation of GTOs were released in 1968. The appearance of the car became much more curved, making the car look aerodynamic. The 6.6L V8 engine was now standard, with the option of a superior 7.5L V8 engine if a driver wanted even more power. Although the vehicle performed well, the model struggled to sell because of federal standards imposing fees on owners of muscle cars.

The third and fourth generation of GTOs both only lasted a year. This is because the GTO was once again sold as a trim option for other models. In 1973, the GTO was sold as a trim for the LeMans again, but had a far less powerful engine. In 1974, the GTO was used for the Ventura, but it had a 5.7L V8 engine that produced awful acceleration numbers.

The GTO name wasn’t used again until 2004, at which point it was sold as a Holden Monaro. These newer GTO models were focused on performance and speed, clearly indicated by the stellar 5.7L and 6.0L V8 engines they were installed with. This allowed a great 0-60 time of just over 5 seconds. This rebranded generation of GTO models lasted until just 2006 when the project ended.

When you think of a Pontiac GTO, the first thing that comes to your mind is raw, muscular power. The GTO embodied everything a muscle car did well, but that ultimately led to its decrease in popularity as regulations changed.
