The Jaguar XJS is the grand tourer successor of the legendary Jaguar E Type. The XJS was known for mixing the excellent speed and acceleration of a grand tourer with the comforts of a luxury sedan. Production of the XJS was split into three distinct series. Series 1 was sold beginning in 1975, and saw just a few changes until 1981. Series 1 XJS models were equipped with a powerful 5.3L V12 engine, and initially offered manual or automatic transmissions, but quickly switched to strictly automatics. These XJS models were comparable with Ferraris and Lamborghinis of the time, outputting similar acceleration and top speed to the other sporty cars.

After 1981, the XJS was equipped with a new, 5.3L V12 engine that offered exceptional gas mileage. The engine was known as a High Efficiency V12, which lead to the XJS being known as the XJS HE during the production of Series 2. Externally, the vehicle acquired a much sleeker look.

The Series 2 XJS featured a few different variations. One was equipped with a 3.6L straight-six cylinder engine. There were multiple different convertibles made during this time as well. The most notable variation was the XJR-S, which was the sportier, performance version of the model that continued production into Series 3.

The Series 3 XJS was sold in 1991. Initially, it could be purchased with an upgraded 4.0L straight-six cylinder engine or the standard 5.3L V12. A year later, the V12 engine was upgraded to a 6.0L V12, which required a new 4-speed automatic transmission. The Series 3 XJS saw a few more style changes and eventually stopped production in 1996. The XJS model is now retired, but the XK8 is known as the successor of the XJS.
