Fiat is an Italian automobile manufacturing company that can trace its roots to 1899. Known worldwide for its range of sporty, compact cars, Fiat today is the third largest automobile manufacturer in the world. One of the most popular, and most desirable classics ever, the Fiat 124 Spider is a 2+2 convertible, called a Spider in Italy, and a coupe through the 1970s. A Fiat 124 Spider service manual is an essential tool for keeping a classic Fiat 124 Spider roadworthy. Re-introduced to the United States in 2016, the current Fiat 124 Spider is a slick, smooth convertible that takes advantage of Fiatís embrace of retro style and incorporates technology from Mazda and Alfa Romeo, making a sporty, robust car that is highly desirable to own.

The Fiat 124 Spider was introduced to the United States in 1968. In 1969, the Spider became one of the very first vehicles to come standard with four wheel disc brakes, a dual overhead cam engine, radial ply tires and a five speed manual transmission. The lightweight car lived up to its sporty name, and became a cult classic almost overnight. Today, good condition original cars are difficult to find and bring high prices. Though the little convertible is advertised as producing only 89 horsepower, the low weight and well engineered transmission provide plenty of get up and go.

Fiat used the 124 Spider in rally racing in Europe and the United States in the late 1960s through the 1970s. Despite adding a steel roll bar for safety, Fiat was able to trim enough weight to get the vehicle down to slightly more than 2,000 lbs. With power increased over the standard production model to 128 horsepower and a top speed of 118 mph, the Fiat 124 Spider Rally was a fast and powerful vehicle that recorded victories in the World Rally Championship in 1977, 1978 and 1980.

Available to the general public, today these street legal racing machines are very difficult to find and command steep prices, particularly vehicles with a documented racing heritage.

The modern Fiat 124 Spider is based on the Mazda MX-5 platform and is powered by a turbo charged Alfa Romeo four cylinder engine that produces 160 horsepower. Restoring and maintaining a classic Fiat 124 Spider is an easy do it yourself project with a Fiat 124 Spider repair manual. These manuals provide descriptions and diagrams of each of the vehicles systems and explain how to properly care for these intriguing little Italian beauties.
